Year built 1990
Location of boat Midland, Ontario
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1997
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Without doubt
Gear that's been added Only a gybe prevention system off the toe rail.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Comfort and convenience for long weekends.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Poorly thought out location of hot water tank. Obviously designed by someone who never had to winterize one.The water supply lines to the aft of the boat require special attention when it comes to winterizing. They are low and can hold water. Problem solved by using a compressor and blowing the water out of the system. But a drain cock or two in the right place would help.Bilge pump does not empty bilge. Use a sponge or mop.Changing the oil is a treat. I keep the engine nice and clean and the flat bit on the top of the engine makes it a little more comfortable.Weather seals on aft lockers and deep storage areas should be part of the builder's responsibility and maybe now is.
Sailing characterisitcs The Passage points well even with roller furling. Sails well under genoa alone and the addition of the main adds perhaps stability and a knot.Is surprisingly fast, as the occassional C
Motoring characterisitcs Powers along well about seven knots in calm seas at about 2,000 RPM. Not much increase in speed at higher revs. and engine noise becomes more noticable.
Liveability With generator operation once a day for about an hour all the facilities of the Passage can be enjoyed to the maximum. More that one or two light on and the stereo plays all day.Refrigeration adds the icing to the cake and we can stock the freezer with enough frozen meats for a three week vacation. We added a spring type mattress in the main cabin which provides significant additional comfort. The main salon layout lends itself to entertaining or just plain relaxing.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Always had good luck and good experience with the parts department. They provide knowledgable help in solving problems or pass you along to someone who can help if they can't.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Alan Adelkind was of supreme assistance when we were looking and we felt terrible when another, less deserving broker found our Passage. But these are the breaks.
