Review of the Hunter 29.5 by billybee41

Year built 1994
Location of boat Long Beach, MS
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2013
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. I love the way the boat handles under sail and the cockpit has more room than much larger boats. In the slip, people are always saying Nice boat, I like you boat, etc.
Gear that's been added A Standrad Horizon Matrix VHF, a dodger and a Garmin 741xs chartplotter.
Structural or complex improvements I built doors for the companion way with a frame that fits where the boards go and the whole system can be removed to install the boards when we are away from the boat for extended periods of time.
The boat's best features Ease of handling sails with the fractional rig when single handing or just sailing with my wife. Tacking or jibing is not a promlem. The large cockpit and roominess of the cabin is more than a lot of larger boats. It has a huge aft stateroom.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. My boat has the optional retractional bowsprint for an asamyterical spinnaker but it was not rigged when I bought the boat. I have downloaded the owners manual from this website but a drawing is missing that shows the bowsprint rigging. I have contacted the factory but they do not have any info. I have also contacted a few owners from this site that have the bowsprint on their boats but have not been able to get any info. The aft swept spreaders prevent you from sailing directly downwind because the mainsail runs the risk of being damaged. When I raise my mainsail it gets extremely hard when it gets about 3/4 of the way up. I havent figured this out yet.
Sailing characterisitcs It is a very responsive boat and is easy to sail short handed. Again you cannot sail directly down wind because of the aft swep spreaders.
Motoring characterisitcs I have a slight vibration when under power. I keep the bottom clean so I dont think it is from barnacles on the prop or shaft. When I have the boat hauled I will check for bent or damaged blades and/or prop shaft.
Liveability We are only able to stay for 2-3 days at the time but it is fine for 2 people. It would get cramped for two couples.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) They have been very attentive but were not able to help me with the bowsprint rigging. They simply didnt have any info on my boat.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought the boat through Turner Marine in Mobile, AL. Jim Cash was the sales man and it was an excellent experience. I had them change the oil and filters and bottom paint before I moved it from Mobile to Long Beach, MS.
