Review of the Hunter 40 by Doug Mac Donald

Year built 1988
Location of boat Whitby, Ontario. Canada
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Multi-week coastal cruising
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2009
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. We spent a long time looking at all types of boats and the hunter 40 had the layout and price we were looking for. It also is a great sailing hunter not a D/Q
Gear that's been added Yes. Icom VHF radio. Icom SSB, Profile tank monitoring system, new drive shaft, dripless seal and coupling. Mack pack mailsail system.
Structural or complex improvements Repair stress cracks in hull do to previous owners lifting boat to far aft with aft sling. Replaced all thruhulls, stripped bottom and painted with Interpertect and CSC. I also removed fiberglass from keel, faired and covered with Interpertect 2000. I will also need to recore port deck from chainplates aft.
The boat's best features easy to sail, nice layout
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The biggest problem has been incorrest installation (after market) and maintenance that the boat has received since the boat left the factory. Also the Hood furling system needs to be replaced.
Sailing characterisitcs Well balanced sailing characteristics. Need to reef main around 20knts or when my wife gives my that look!
Motoring characterisitcs Great! 6knts at 2200 to 2500 RPM. Boat has a 17" three blade Max Prop. Took me a little time to get use to backing her into our slip but can back her in and stop on a dime with the Max Prop.
Liveability Very good. Big and roomy. The centerline Queen aft berth was key in our boat search. I hate when you have to do a leg over to get out of bed in the middle of the night.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) A little . They never got back to me directly, I had to go through the dealer in our area for information.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
