Review of the Hunter 240 by Lee Carroll

Year built 1999
Location of boat Morehead City, NC
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, I have really enjoyed the boat.
Gear that's been added I bought the boat used, but it had furling jib, cockpit seat cushions, interior fabric upgrade, bimini, pop-top cabin enclosure, 9hp Tohatsu motor with controls in the cockpit, cam cleats for jib sheets. I had depth and knot meter added when I purchased the boat.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Relative easy of trailer boat rigging and wrapup. I can only sail occassionally, so can't justify the cost of a slip. It's easy to trailer, rig and sail. Then easy to trailer and haul home. Nice to have a trailer boat with a cabin, bunks, head. Fun and easy to sail. Lines all run to the cockpit. Roomy cockpit and stern seats.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. No real problems.
Sailing characterisitcs Great speed in low to moderate wind. It's fun to pass the other boats when the wind is light. In heavy winds, easy to reef before you go. The big boats out run you in heavy wind; but they should.
Motoring characterisitcs Most motoring is fine. I have trouble departing the dock in wind/current. It's difficult for me to get steerage initially.
Liveability Great for day sailing. Room to go below to rest or get out of the weather. Haven't spent the night on it yet, but hope to do so with my son. Wouldn't want to stay on board long.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) N/A
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Dealer was great (and he is a frequent here). I was looking at several different sizes of boats and he took time to talk about how we would use our boat. Ultimately, I bought a used boat from him instead of a smaller new boat. He didn't make as much money, but he has another satisfied customer who appreciates his candor and knowledge.
Other comments I did a fair amount of research before buying my boat in 2002. While I have sailed many times (mostly charters), this is the first boat I have owned. Since buying it I have spent a lot of time reading this and some other forums. I have been very pleased with my boat, and Hunter seems to have a good reputation as a well designed and well made boat. Certainly some have had some problems and complaints, but for the most part, Hunter seems to be a good manufacturer.
