Review of the Hunter 240 by Steve Murch

Year built 1998
Location of boat Wilmington, NC
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? No, because this boat is a litle bit too big for ramps in the Wilmington area and slips are expensive. For the inexperience sailors the boat is a bit tender. Boat fever got the best of us. Other than that the boat is great.
Gear that's been added bimini top, cockpit engine controls, porta potti, roller furler jib, stern rail seats.
Structural or complex improvements The magic tilt trailer was modified by dealer so boat would not get scratched on lower bow rollers upon retrival
The boat's best features Alot of boat for the money. I have searched for over a year on trailerable sailboats and this is the best deal all around. The bimini top fits great and really helps keep the heat out.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The line to keep the rudder lowered broke on our first time out without the dealer. Not too impressed with the workmanship all around, but what do you expect for the price. For example caulking just slopped in, dealer had a bolt that needed replaced for centerboard, boat shipped to dealer supposedly without mast. All items fixed by dealer. Works great now.
Sailing characterisitcs Boat is great for lakes and bays; but here in the Wilmington area its very busy and trying to sail in the Intercoastal waterway. We will not take this boat into the ocean due to the heeling and our inexperience on the ocean.
Motoring characterisitcs This boat cannot back up. Our boat did not come with an outboard engine handle, turning against the current takes two people, one for the tiller and the other to move the engine by hand. Will be getting a handle for the engine so our manuverabilty will be better. Always remember you need two 3 gallon gas cans if you'll come back against the tide with no wind left.(Like we did with only 3 gallons of gas)
Liveability Lots of room, everybody that has seen this boat are impressed with the space we have in the cabin. Have not lived or stayed overnight yet.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) These people are slow as molasses to ship parts and boats. Our dealer had to change delivery dates four times and than was over 2 hours late. Dealer did go over the boat, but my advice is to not allow the dealer to show you the boat in the heat of the day as we did. Also a good bit of advice is to ensure your bill of sale has the correct hull, engine and trailer ID numbers. Ours didn't and after 2 months of ownership are still trying to fix the problem.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any All dealers will sell you a boat, and we felt we got a good boat for a fair price. Our dealer came with an excellent reputation but in actualality it was no differnet than anybody else we could of went to. Our Hunter dealer did take care of our boat and trailer problems but in our opinion it took a long time. **Also make sure the dealer delivers you the boat in your area where YOU will sail, not his. You'll be surprized how different it will make your in your ability to sail this boat. Better yet find a Hunter 240 and test sail it. You'll love it in bays and lakes.
