Review of the Hunter 240 by Jefferson Davis

Year built 1999
Location of boat Aurora Colorado
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely. We love it. I think it's the best trailerable around.
Gear that's been added Nothing major. Just a few items like spring lines and a floating winch handle.
Structural or complex improvements no
The boat's best features Water ballast is a great feature for a trailer sailor. The mast struts make raising and lowering the mast very easy. The lack of a back stay allows the mainsail to be much fuller and more powerful. The 110% genoa is also powerful. Roller furling is a must.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. nothing yet.
Sailing characterisitcs We've only had it about a month in a local lake. We do get some wildly erratic winds though. I've had it go clear around me. Tack and Jibe without changing direction. We can also get some very strong bursts out of our afternoon thunderstorms. The 240 handles well through it all. When reefed down, it is quite comfortable in 20-30 knot breezes.
Motoring characterisitcs The lake we are in now only allows electric motors. The lack of power boats and jet skis is great. However, the 3hp electric just isn't enough to do the job. It moves around in calm water, but trying to go into a strong wind just doesn't work. I plan to move to another location at some point and upgrade to a 8hp Honda.
Liveability It has all the basics for short stays (few days)
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Our dealer, The Anchorage, was terrific.
