Review of the Hunter 240 by James Benedict

Year built 1999
Location of boat Garden City (Bear Lake) Utah
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1999
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? I think I would. With this model you get a lot of boat for the money. I like that fact that it is quite easy to put it on a trailer and go sail on another lake.
Gear that's been added Roller furling. It think that is a must with this boat. Yamaha 9 hp outboard.
Structural or complex improvements No. But I am going to work out a way to manage the jib from the cockpit this year.
The boat's best features It seems to move as fast as any boat on the water in a light wind. Putting the mast up and down really is as easy as advertized. I have done it alone.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Nothing has broken so far. But it is less than one year old
Sailing characterisitcs It moves well in light winds. You do need to reef it early when the wind cranks up, however and it will still move along well. In a gusty wind it will heel over fairly fast and scare the daylights out of some of my family memebers. It doesn't feel as stable as a boat with a fixed keel when the wind is gusting.
Motoring characterisitcs No problems so far but I haven't really had to do it in extreme conditions, yet.
Liveability Some of my older kids have stayed on it overnight for two nights running, four at a time. It isn't the Ritz, but it sure beats sleeping in a tent. I wouldn't try it with any more people than that and not for much longer. So it is great for a weekend get away.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I haven't.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any There were no problems. The dealers were right up front about everything. They rigged the boat out and came with me to sail it the first time it was on the water...to give me a demo and check for any problems. I was very satisfied with the service.
