Review of the Hunter 40 by Bob Bell

Year built 1986
Location of boat Herrington Harbor, MD
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? absolutely
Gear that's been added prior owner - added new aft holding tank in port settee (capped off original aft tank) with "full" sensors on both tanks. Added Adler Barbour refrigeration to ice box. Added Simpson Lawrence Anchorman windlass.
Structural or complex improvements Prior owner - added furlex jib furler in 94; furlex main furler in 96; Added CruiseAir 12000 btu Stowaway AC model SXRR12 with factory special low profile blower behind companionway steps - with vents to aft and main cabins.
The boat's best features full height headroom easy engine access (all four sides) CNG powered galley open main salon
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. galley sink drains - easy to knock loose slanted storage lockers - no room for books
Sailing characterisitcs Great sailing - points nicely to windward. Very responsive helm - easy to balance.
Motoring characterisitcs 2500 hours on Yanmar and still going strong. No oil consumption, no leaks. Plenty of power in all sea states.
Liveability for short duration cruising - she's fine. Not enough storage for extended cruising.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) they have been responsive to my questions. Still don't believe one answer they gave me regarding no neutral detection on engine start circuit.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any bought directly from prior owner - and 5 years later we are still friends!
