Review of the Hunter 42 by Chuck Vincent

Year built 1993
Location of boat Vermillion Bay - South Louisiana
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, we looked at several boats in this size, and found the 42 Passage to be on target for what we wanted. I had a picture of the H42 as my screen saver for the year before we bought it.
Gear that's been added The previous owner had added many features, so far I have only added a second VHF down at the nav station, Cell Phone, changed out the GPS to a Garmin 210, Propane Barbecue Pit, and other small improvement that most new owners would do.
Structural or complex improvements No.
The boat's best features Stable solid boat, with the room weve always wanted. Lots of light, with an excellent cabin layout.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The roller furling on the Genoa sucks big time, the windless is one way, and will jam if you dont watch it, the visibility out the bow with the sail cut is very poor, getting the main up is a bear, and you might as well not even have the Duchman Flaking on the main. The CNG setup is poor, and should have been Propane to begin with, and gauges are needed for water and waste. You cant even do a visual on the tanks, and with the waste being only 35 gls, your time to full is very short.
Sailing characterisitcs I am not that experienced, but I find it likes 15 knots or better to get going, but takes very little helm to control it. Very easy and stable to work with.
Motoring characterisitcs The previous owner had changed the factory two blade for a three blade. In most bay or coastal conditions at 2700 RPM, I am knocking down 7 or so knots. Since the Yanmar 62HP is the same engine block and setup they get 100HP out of, it can take a lick and come back for more. I am going to switch over to Synthetic motor oil though, I like the result I have seen on other engines I have used it on.
Liveability Outstanding.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) N/A
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any N/A
