Review of the Hunter 42 by Scallywagger

Year built 1995
Location of boat St Andrews or Arbroath Scotland
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Multi-week coastal cruising
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2013
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes
Gear that's been added I am about to put a Gori 3 blade folding propeller on her. I fitted davits.
Structural or complex improvements I have done nothing to my Hunter
The boat's best features Of course a fantastic big aft cabin for sailing with my wife. We have fitted a 22 inch tv and love to be in the aft cabin in bed with the heater on in winter to watch it. Great pressure in the showers. Love the aft shower bath tub. Engine is not well sound proofed and is difficult to get at.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The head sail furler can be difficult to furl in strong winds. Often take the rope onto the coach roof electric halyard winch to assist. Single line reafing is great with lazy jacks. Could not do without the Autohelm 6000
Sailing characterisitcs I have crossed the North Sea 6 times now with Casper. Last year 366nm to Denmark.and the wind increased to 35-40 knots. I reduced sail as much as I could but, I feel a third reef in the main would have helped had the designer had UK sails put one in. On the beam and quarter, what a flyer. Big boat, I have always felt safe visiting Denmark, Sweden and Germany last year.
Motoring characterisitcs I believe it is the original Mitchel or something fixed 3 blade propeller and it motors Casper well. Sometimes hard to put the lever in ahead of astern and I have taken the scine of my knucles on the binacle surround. Engine is noisy when below.
Liveability It is my intention to live aboard her 6 months a year around the Baltic states with my wife. Returning to Scotland each winter by plane. Both my wife and two young daughters and I have lived on the boat for 5 weeks each summer since I have owned Casper and she is a great live aboard and, that is why I bought her. The middle saloon table berth is terrible and I have never fully understood how it goes down and together. The yacht is ideal for 4 but not really any more.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I have never had dealings with Hunter.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any No comments to make. A new mast and rigging was fitted 2012/13 by Atlantic Spars of Brixam UK and it was not correct and some halyards missing. They were Seldon UK. The Scottish agents for Seldon visited Casper and did what they could and I thank them for that but, missing halyards, last steps and radar guard they would not refit and supply. I would have to do that.
Other comments I love Casper. She was very space age for her design and year and, when in visiting marinas; she looks as modern as todays built yachts. She is always admired and people ask to look aboard. I am very proud to own her.
