Review of the Hunter 42 by Sid Jarvis

Year built 1992
Location of boat St. Thomas, USVI
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1993
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes unless Hinckley had a huge price reduction.
Gear that's been added Autopilot ST 7000, Garmin GPS, Marinco thru hull fitting for TV and phone. Heath echo-charger for the starting battery and a PSS dripless stuffing box.
Structural or complex improvements No but I will switch to cutter rig this fall.
The boat's best features My wife likes the accomodations and interior layout. We frequently cruise with another couple and the private cabins and heads are a major feature.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The Hood furling system mounted below the deck has been the most troublesome. The 130 headsail in a strong wind is a real bear. In order to furl the headsail in a strong wind (which is most of the time) we must turn off to 120 degrees. I had the riggers reduce the friction as much as possible by replacing all the blocks for the furling line with Harken blocks. I also installed a paynter to raise the headsail swivel closer to the masthead.
Sailing characterisitcs With the 130 headsail the boat performs great in 12 to 18 knots. Over 20 we need to think about reefing. Less than 10 knots, turn on the engine. For the most part the boat is very seaworthy and we have experienced some strong conditions.
Motoring characterisitcs With the 62HP turbo Yanmar and a three bladed prop, it's the best. The three bladed prop is also important to us in stopping the boat at the dock with winds of 15 to 20 on the beam as we turn into our slip.
Liveability For liveability it couldn't be better.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) In dealing with the people at Hunter I have always come away with a positive feeling. I have always owned Hunters (3) and I can't imagine that other boat builders have better customer service.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I purchased my boat from Sandy Hook Yacht sails and I have the greatest respect for Hank and Bill who have built a highly successful business. No doubt through excellent customer service.
Other comments There is no doubt that the Hunter line of boats is the most bang (boat) for the buck.
