Review of the Hunter 33.5 by Don Gibb

Location of boat Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico  
The boat is sailed on Open ocean  
How the boat is used Weekends and longer  
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots  
Average size of crew 2-4  
Liveaboard? No  
Owner bought the boat in 1998  
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Better tankage all around, more weight in the keel, higher horsepower engine, full electeronics package  
Gear that's been added Spinnaker halyard, asym spinnaker, boom tent, peak tent, inspection plate in fuel tank, cd player, reefing line led aft, seconf primary winch, batteyr charger  
Structural or complex improvements reinforced with epoxy all deck hardware, barrier coat on the bottom  
The boat's best features amount of boat for the money, good speed and sail ratios, lively boat  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. poor quality fittings throughout, glass lay-up is only fair, through hulls are also of poor quality  
Sailing characterisitcs faster on a port tack, swings wildly at anchor, boat speed drops at 30 degrees heel, shimmies on a good fresh down wind  
Motoring characterisitcs typical fin keel, would be great w/ a higher horsepower engine  
Liveability for a couple cruising for any lenght provided you stop for water and food it is great, definetly a coastal cruiser, blue water it aint.  
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) n/a  
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Broker knew the boat's characteristics but lied about them  
Other comments The addage " you get what you paid for" so accurately descibes the boat. It is a great boat for the money but don't expect a C & C or a Tartan
