Review of the Hunter 29.5 by Mark and Julie Roskin

Year built 1994
Location of boat Herring Bay, MD
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1995
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely, it's been a great decision and the perfect boat for the two of us to handle on the Chesapeake Bay.
Gear that's been added Dutchman sail flaking system (a blessing)Wind instrument, bimini, custom aft berth mattress, shades for ports
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features Cockpit layout (roominess and rail seats)Cabin layoutEase of handling for two peopleComfort and seaworthinessEasy to maintain (systems and appearance)One of the best looking boats on the bay
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Main is difficult to raise Companionway slide doesn't drain properly giving the cabin a shower when opened after a rain,
Sailing characterisitcs Bad weather helm in 15 kt winds (a reef is a must)Handles Chesapeake squalls (30 kt winds) very wellVery easy to tack
Motoring characterisitcs Very reliable and easy to handle. Backs reasonably well - we always back into slips
Liveability Great room in cockpit. Cabin is well laid out and serves us well on weekends and longer. We never sleep more than the two of us - don't think it would work for us with more. Accomodations for day sails are fine for 4-6 people.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Limited dealings but usually responsive and helpful
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Tidewater has been pretty responsive and we stay in touch for minor questions and suggestions.
