Review of the Hunter 260 by Richard H. Chadinha

Year built 2000
Location of boat Pelican Lake, MN
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? Yes
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes
Gear that's been added Added and replaced all other cluthes clutches.
Structural or complex improvements NO
The boat's best features Large cabin Wheel option jib furler points very well
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Rudder lowering design needs improvement. It is to hard to pull the rudder down. Rubber pad slips and the hole for the locking pin will not line up.
Sailing characterisitcs Turning seems to be a little sluggish. Boat is slow to respond. I have raced the Hunter a few times and it points very well for a cruser.
Motoring characterisitcs My Hunter has a 9.9 outboard and it seems under powered in wind over 15 MPR.
Liveability I live on my boat every weekend during the summer. It is roomy, bright and colorful and very relaxing.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) OK
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any The Hunter broker I purchased the boat through was very friendly but was not very up front about some of the things I saw while inspecting the boat and asked about. It was something that was easy to fix but could have caused a major accident if not fixed. Problem: The four rivits that held the mast raising pole were all loose. When I asked the dealer why they were loose he said that it was normal and not a problem. After I raised the mast a couple of times and the mast kept falling to one side and finally bent the pole. I called the mast manufacturer and he said that all the fivits must be tight. I replaced all the rivits with SS bolts.
Other comments The one improvement I would like to see is two more winches added aft in the cockpit for short handed sailing.
