Review of the Hunter 260 by Jeanne Raney

Year built 1998
Location of boat Somers Point, NJ
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Mixed feelings. The buoyant rudder is terrible and I have spent a good deal in trying to make it easier to keep down while sailing. I had to replace the line several times as it frays with the constant strain against the moving waters. Also the open back is great for getting aboard but unfortunately without a slight lip, things have a way of sliding right on out to sea while sailing. Other than that, I do love my boat.
Gear that's been added Not yet. Still grappling with above problem.
Structural or complex improvements Not as yet.
The boat's best features Easy to sail. The stern seats to keep company out of the way.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The rope clutch that held the rope for the center board broke allowing the center board to drop down while at the mooring. Friends helped to raise it but until I pull the boat out of the water for the winter, I won't be able to use it as it has accumulated too much sea life for it to be raised up and down without difficulty. Also if I were designing it, I would put a rope cleat aft of the winch to hold the jib lines.
Sailing characterisitcs The large mainsail does allow for good speed in the area where I sail.
Motoring characterisitcs
Liveability
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) They have tried to help with the rudder problem by sending a bolt with a wing nut to help hold it down. When I originally bought the boat, one of the outside cushins had a tear in it and it was replaced immediately. Other than the person with whom I spoke at that time who apparently felt that women don't know the port from the starboard, the company has been very good in helping with problems.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any My experience was terrible but understandedly unique. I bought it from a dealer who was being closed down by Hunter and I had many problems from having to rig the boat myself to not getting my registration papers.
