Review of the Hunter 240 by John Frederick

Year built 1999
Location of boat Rocky Fork Lake, Ohio
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutley, Great boat for the wife and I. When our son decides to go for a sail it works very well for the 4 of us.
Gear that's been added Bimini, Knot, Depth, Boomkicker & vang, rudder to outboard linkage (a must for this boat). Boom kicker works real well I don't have topping lift to adjust and this makes it easier to sail.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Light wind capability, the lake we sail on is narrow and has strange wind patterns. The light air performance helps. Second to this is the spacious cockpit. We spend weekends on the boat and the room is nice.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The keel. I can't tell if the keel has swung completely down. When we purchased the boat the keel up haul was pinched which wouldn't let it down. A local shop checked and fixed it, this part of the design needs to be looked at.
Sailing characterisitcs She is quick to 20 degrees. Being a new sailor I let out the main or reef the jib to keep the heel under 20. I'm a new sailor and just learning, but each time we let her go a little more. This boat is fun.
Motoring characterisitcs No problems, with the rudder connected to the outboard. Also our's has remote controls for the Nissan.
Liveability Great for weekends, This year we are taking a crusie on bigger lake where we are going to live on it for 5 days. With planning we think there is plenty of room.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Fantastic, We bought the boat used and had a small poblem with the sink. The Hunter folks were great getting me the part I needed. When we move up I look very favorable at a new Hunter.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any The dealer we purchased it from is in Michigan, another story, but the service was excellent. These folks normally sell the 35's and 40's, but I feel we got as service as if we purchase a 100k boat. Definetley have to thank Chuck at Toledo Beach Marina for finding us this boat.
Other comments With this boat being a little tender I don't know if I would purchase it as your first boat, I did, but looking at the past year learning to sail and sail it has been fun. Great boat.
