Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes I think it's the best value in a trailerable cruising boat on tha market.
Gear that's been added I purchased the boat with:CDI furlerTohatsu 8hp - a great plus in the bay Sternrail seats - kids love themI have added:VHFCompassHand held GPSCruising spinikerMagna Grill
Structural or complex improvements None I did mount the fire extinguisher, and am planing on constructing the cabinet that is illustrated in the photo forum this winter.
The boat's best features It's a great boat for a small familey. We have childre ages 3 and 6. They love to spend the weekend on it. People new to sailing will need time to get used to the amount of heal in heavy air, but if you carry a balanced sail plan the boat hadndles heavy weather well.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The clam cleats that come with the boat are worthless. I would like to see a jib track on boats equiped with furlers to allow better sheeting angles when reefed. The snap shackle on the Schaefer main sheet cleat exploded, but my dealer and Hunter quickly mailed a new one at no cost.
Sailing characterisitcs The boat goes well in light air 3-10 knots. At 12-15 knots my wife useally insists we reef the Main or the Jib. Have made several all day sails in sustained winds over 20 knots. Boat goes great as long as it is reefed. I tried on a couple of occassion to put the leeward rail in the water, but about the time the rubrail hits the water the rudder breaks free and the boat rounds up.
Motoring characterisitcs I strongly recoment the 8hp Tohatsu over the 4hp if you are going to sail in tidal waters. I have not had problems with the engine. The boat backs predictable. The turning radius can be decreased by turning with both the motor and the rudder.
Liveability It's great for weekends. Have spent 3 days on it with the wife and two Kids. Will be taking a 7 day solo trip in September up the bay.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) They were great took care of the problem with the mainsheet block promptly I didn't miss a weekend of sailing. Did it at no charge!!!!
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought the boat from
