Review of the Hunter 240 by Brad Amundson

Year built 2001
Location of boat Kabekona Lake Minnesota
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, waiting one more year though. We have a 1 1/2 year old who likes to move around even at 30 degrees of heel. I have had fun adding things and building things for the boat. I have sailed it a dozen time or more for 8hrs at a time at times. At the beginning there was a bit of a learning curve.
Gear that's been added Raytheon Auto Pilot ST2000+ a must have. Roller Furl for the Jib. Solar panel mounted vertically at rear of boat. Eric Lindstroms stereo/accessory cabinet mounted behind the sink (pictured on this web site) great idea. GPS and speakers for stereo.
Structural or complex improvements Not, unless installing Auto Pilots and building cabinetry is complex.
The boat's best features Its is a roomy boat with lots of storage pockets down below. Again the Auto Pilot, Roller Furl and Radio. It also seems to sail really will in light winds.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Rudder control assembly was missing a double tackle pulley. I was also missing the boom vang attachment piece for the base of the mass. I would not put a table mount in the cockpit. Bracket is hard on the feet and I never use it anyway. Table does not sit level in place either. Boat needs more cup holders down below.
Sailing characterisitcs We have nearly burried the windows tacking, which is fun. Down wind I might have to look at a Spinneker or at least a wisker pole for the Jib. I do plan on adjusting the Center Board upward for better performance.
Motoring characterisitcs 6hp 4 stroke is a great motor
Liveability Have not stayed on an extended period of time and never intended to with this boat.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Informing!
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any A little bit busy for the little guy but very nice people. I just hope they realize that this could only be a starter boat for us.
Other comments Its a good looking boat and with more practice should be easier to work with. I'm picky about the care and that takes time. Would also recommend a vehicle with a towing capacity of 4000 pounds or more. Mine tows 3000's and it did pull it but at half the gas mileage. We will be looking into an SUV next year.
