Lifeline Netting for a 33.5

posted 10-07-2008 by Geoff Perkins

Start off by removing top lifeline. For now just leave the lower lifeline in place.

Thread top lifleline through the top diamonds in the netting, but don’t run the lifeline through the stanchions.

Getting started.

Tension the top lifeline so it lays horizontally without drooping, and tie it to the top of each stanchion. This allows you to adjust the netting fore and aft without having to unthread the lifeline every time you need to make an adjustment.

Now vertically attach the netting to the aftermost stanchion. I used little clamps.

Next thread an 1/8’ nylon line through the bottom diamonds of the netting from fore to aft. (See red arrows)

Then pull the bottom string at the bow so that the tension lifts the netting from the deck a bit. This part is a little trial and error. Too much tension produces too taut an installation, too little and the netting is too slack.

Looking Aft

The rail on my boat has a series of oblong holes spaced about eight inches apart along its length. Starting aft of the last stanchion thread a new line from the outside of the rail, through the first hole, then around the line you ran through the bottom diamonds. (See red arrows.) This pulls the foot of the netting down to deck level. Keep working forward, in and out of each hole until you have pulled the netting down to the deck.

Make adjustments to length as necessary to obtain tautness you desire.

Reeving the tension line at the rail.

After getting everything adjusted the way you like it, remove the lower lifeline and thread it through the netting and stanchions, alternating diamonds as you go.

Before unfastening the top lifeline to run it through the stanchions, mark each diamond with a piece of tape where the stanchion will be. This helps you get it back in the right position – first time without trial and error.

Now, unfasten the top lifeline, then bring it aft and thread it through the top diamonds only this time run it through the holes in the stanchions.

Finally make all final ties at the bow and aftermost stanchion. (I’m leaving my ends tied but uncut until I see if rain makes adjusting tautness necessary.)

Repeat on other side.

Repeat.

Job finished.
