Turnbuckle Toggle Tether

posted 10-07-2008 by Brigg Franklin

Mark, way off in Western Australia started this idea. He was talking about how he fixed the problem of the shroud toggles catching sideways when raising the mast on his 260. I stole his basic idea and hopefully improved on it a little. (well see the next time I go sailing.) I took a short section of reinforced clear 1.5 ID plastic hose and cut it into 4 lengths. I then took the turnbuckle toggles off the chainplate U bolts at the bottom of the shrouds. (lower your mast before doing this!) I pushed the hose over the U bolts to mark where to drill the hole through the hose.

Prepared for surgery

(Sorry I couldnt resist the title.)
After drilling the holes clear through the hose I use a #8 x 1.5 Phillips flat head machine screw with a finish washer and locking nut. When I replace these Ill go to a #10 screw. It proved very difficult to get the lock nut threaded properly between the hull and the tubing and I stripped several. I think the larger screw and nut will work better, but dont go any longer than 1.5 or the screw will rub on the cabin side. The screw does not touch any of the shroud hardware, it just compresses the tubing to keep it from sliding up the shroud.

Open wide and say Ahhh!

After drilling the holes in the tubing, I slid it up the shroud and then reattached the shroud to the U bolt. I then slid the tubing back down and pushed the bolt through the pre-drilled holes. I used a long nose pliers on the self locking nut, pushed on the bolt to get it through the tube and screwed them together. As I mentioned earlier, I recommend you go to a #10 SS screw as I think it will start easier. As seen here the sleeve is snug, the toggles loose but standing at attention, and all seems right in the world.
