Rudder mods compressed

posted 10-07-2008 by Jeff Peltier

I added a 2 * 10 * 10 gage SS strap to the top for added support of the plates. Its important to hold this in a jig and weld in a pattern that minimizes warping to ensure verticle alignment. I was able to get mine within 1/8 in 4 which, no doubt is within factory tolerances.

Another shot of the added strap. The strap allows the load to be spread more evenly over half the tube instead of just 2 points as in the butt weld.

This is what I use to keep the rudder in the down position. The combination of the spring and the wrap around the stanction is enough to keep the rudder down unless it strikes an object.

rudder spring

This shows how the spring was mounted. Note the light line that holds the spring when not in use and the clevis which is easier to hook to the spring.

This is my version of the motor connection. A 1/4 rod, threaded on both ends with a spring loaded ball connection on the rudder end for quick disconnect.

A spring loaded ball joint was used on the rudder end for a quick disconnect. Note the light spring and line used to hold the rod for quick reconnect.
