Cockpit Table

posted 09-12-2008 by David Hoch

We wanted a cockpit table for Abundance and looked at some of the readily available ones. I even bought one through West Marine but it was too big. So I measured our boat which has a pedestal and guard installed. I decided on a folding table with fiddles and used the Edson hardware kit to mount it. The hinges are the key to a good installation. They are called butler tray hinges (SKU #897016). I found them at www.hardwaresource.com for $6.00 each. They are stainless and work perfectly. The mounting hardware from Edson is the best I found and works well. It is part number 785-761 but be sure it matches the diameter of your pedestal guard.

I used oak 1 X 6 boards, edge-gluing two of them with dowels for the main section and one each for the leaves. I used some 1/4 X 1 1/2 stock for the fiddles and glued them in place. The length of the table is about 20 - you can vary this but remember it will interfere with the mainsheet under sail if its too long. I designed the folded width to be a couple of inches wider than the pedestal, but you can vary this too.

We love it, both for sailing and sitting still for a meal.
