Tiller Support

posted 09-12-2008 by Dan

My 2004 H-240 came with a screw in the base of the tiller that allowed for adjusting the height of the tiller. This didnt work too well for me because when I adjusted the screw to be long enough for the height I wanted it would get broken because of the length and the pressure put on the screw. I solved the problem by cutting a board that varies in thickness from about 1/4 inch in the back to 1 inch in the front. The board is about 4 high and 10 wide. I mounted this board to the baseboard that is the mount for the top end of the tiller. On top of the wood I also added a thin piece that I cut from a cheap plastic cutting board. This allows the end of the tiller to rest directly on the board so that its better supported and it slides across the board with very little friction due to the cutting board material. I also drilled a series of holes in these boards at various locations and made some pins out of 1/4 inch aluminum rod. This really helps when single-handing. I get the boat trimmed where I want it to be and then pin the rudder in place. This solution has solved two problems at once.
