Review of the Hunter 30_74-83 by Ron Mariano

If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. It has been a very good boat and represents a great value. The boat isn't without its short comings (replacing a stuffing box was a horid job), but in all, I have been very pleased.  
Gear that's been added Wind and Boat Speed Inst., LORAN, Bow roller, ground tackle and a dodger has been ordered for spring 2001.  
Structural or complex improvements Stuffing Box, Stuffing Box, Stuffing Box! I installed a new dripless, because I never want to try to get into this area of the boat again.  
The boat's best features Spaciousness of the interior, traditional lines, value priced.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Did I mention my Stuffing Box project? What really made the project so aggrivating was that I pretty much couldn't re-pack the old box because there isn't enough shaft length between the box and the coulping flange to take the bonnet off. The boat has also been very prone to deck leaks (toe rail and cockpit sole hatch), and don't even think about trying to back-up unless you have a lot of room to port.  
Sailing characterisitcs I've learned over time that the boat is simply overpowered with my 150 up. The partial skeg mounted rudder has it's advantages, but removing the advantage of a rudder leading edge makes the boat prone to rounding-up after about 15 kts of breeze w/ the 150 up. That leaves me only a 110. To weather, it is a very capable sail plan, but off the wind, the boat is under-powered.  
Motoring characterisitcs The little Yanmar is a GREAT engine! Powers the boat nicely, even in large seas. It is however quite loud.  
Liveability I've spent up to two weeks aboard with kids, and the boat provided ample space and storage for all.
