Review of the Hunter 23.5 by Gary Nichols

Year built 1994
Location of boat Michigan shore of Lake Erie
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 95
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Probably. I haven't seen a new boat that matches the features and value. But there are many older boats selling for half the price (although most take a Suburban to tow them).
Gear that's been added depth, compass, cockpit cushions, pop-top canvas
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features good balance of sailing and trailering capability.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The halyard clamcleats slip a bit.
Sailing characterisitcs Performs well in light to moderate air. A bit tender, which I don't mind but my crew does. Has the sea motion of a boat twice its displacement which is very comfortable. Stays quite dry in choppy water.
Motoring characterisitcs We have a 6 hp motor with short shaft. The shaft is a bit short, but it motors fine unless it is going straight into heavy seas and wind. But that is what sails are for anyway!
Liveability Great for dailsailing with 1 to 8 people. Overnighting for 2-4 is OK. Pretty tight for a few days on the water. That is the burden of the size: we get to "sail" at 60 mph to some great cruising grounds with the tradeoff that things are a bit tight when we get there.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) very helpful
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any they are very nice and helpful.
