Review of the Hunter 376 by Russell Egge

Year built 1997
Location of boat Wickford RI
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 5-6
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1999
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Love the boat, especially the layout,but...no. We are new to sailing and given the weather in RI this boat is over-powered. With an S/D ratio of 22.3 we are under reef 70% of the time, and seldom if ever wish we had more sail. The sail shape under reef is never a good as you would like. We would have gone for a 37.5 (S/D 17.4 or a 410 (S/D 19.3)
Gear that's been added Electric halyard winch (a must), dodger, bimini, windlas, refridge, gps/chartplotter, radar, high output alternator, misc
Structural or complex improvements None
The boat's best features The ability to take a family of 5 on a three week vacation
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Reef early and often. 15 knot apparent
Sailing characterisitcs 30 degrees heal when close hauling in 10-12 knots of true wind.
Motoring characterisitcs Love to motor this boat. Have been out in 20+ knots without problems. Removed the fuel pickup tube
Liveability Wonderful at dock
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) None
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
