Review of the Hunter 170 by Timothy Geschke

Year built 2000
Location of boat Nashotah, WI
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Not sure yet, but I think so. I just picked it up and I have only had one chance to sail it. My first outing was great.
Gear that's been added No extra stuff yet, I am still waiting to sell my Boston Whaler Harpoon 4.6. I will add the genoa sail kit next year. I am still waiting for my free cushions from Hunter...
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features I unexpectedly found all the round edges to be great while sailing. No more cut hands, feet, and other body parts. I have 4 small kids and they can climb all over without getting all beat up. Easy to rig and launch. Trailers well. Nice sails and hardware.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. So far so good.
Sailing characterisitcs First outing was in about 10 knots. Seemed to be balanced quite well. I don't think it points too well though. The water was warm the open transom makes for easy access.
Motoring characterisitcs None
Liveability I plan to overnight on it this summer. Hey, I'll try anything once ;-)
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Not yet, but they did not ship a mast and boom support for trailering and there was no batten for my main sail. I am still waiting for these and my free cushions to arrive.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought mine from the Sailboat House in Waunakee Wisconsin. They were great in helping me make up my mind on this boat. They sell used boats of all makes as well and had quite an assortment. I had been looking for a new boat for about two years and decided that with my kids at the ages that they are at (9,8,5,2) that this was the right boat at this time. Also, my wife does not like to sail...
