Review of the Hunter 23.5 by William Jones

Year built 1996
Location of boat Cave Run Lake Kentucky
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1995
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Probably. The boat is certainly worth the amount spent. I did not do a lot of research prior to purchasing my Hunter 23.5. The biggest concern I have is the water ballast system. It is imperative to get the boat out of water and empty the ballast tank before freezing termperatures. Since I leave my boat in the water and rarely trailer, it would have probably been better for me to consider a traditionally ballasted boat.
Gear that's been added VHF, Depth Gauge, Grill
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Roomy for a 23.5 boat. Solid components, (Z-Spars, Lewmar, etc)
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The rudder raising system wreaks. The last time I pulled my boat from the water I dragged my rudder (unbeknownst to me) up the ramp.
Sailing characterisitcs Heels quickly. Seems to not be able to compete with other boats in its size class. Perhaps it is the skipper.
Motoring characterisitcs Takes quite awhile to gain steerage in forward. Had a good scare once in close quarters.
Liveability For a 23.5 it is fantastic. Wouldn't want to spend a week on it though!
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Terrific. More U.S. businesses should learn from their customer relations!
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Dealer has also been helpful... a bit expensive on services but probably due to a lack of competition.
