Review of the Hunter 23.5 by Bruce Davis

Year built 1994
Location of boat Long Beach, Mississippi
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1996
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? I was looking for a low maintainance boat that I could keep on a trailer. The 23.5 is great but I might get the 26 for a little more stability and and an enclosed head.
Gear that's been added GPS, depth finder, solar battery charger
Structural or complex improvements 12 volt electrical outlet (cig lighter type), a wooden shelf for the depth finder. I would like to know if anyone has built a cockpit table or stand for equipment to fit the table mount in the floor.
The boat's best features easy to sail and maintain. Lots of room in the cockpit and below. I have slept 6 in a rainstorm without sitting up. The rear entry is very handy.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. In heavy waters the boat is tender. While the open transom and swim lader is handy if you drop any equipment it is likely to slide out the lader.
Sailing characterisitcs We've been out in 15 -20kt winds and in 3 -5 kt winds. Over 12kts you need to reef but the boat still handled well. It is tender in moderate to heavy water but doesn't have a cheap or unsafe feel.
Motoring characterisitcs In moderate to heavy waves the
Liveability Great for an overnight or weekend or until the ice runs out. Perfect for 2 on a weekend but we have had 5 without too much problem. The beauty of this boat is that you can beach it during the day and throw the hook out at night.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) The limited dealing with Hunter have all been very good experiences.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought it used.
