Review of the Hunter 460 by Dave Young

Year built 2000
Location of boat Alameda, CA
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 23-30 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1999
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? You bet. First sailboat, spent a year looking when Hunter introduced this model. Perfect large layout which will be very comfortable, fast and safe for some cruising for a couple / few years.
Gear that's been added Factory options: Inner forestay, roller furling main, 76hp diesel, owner stateroom fwd, aft utility room, washer-dryer.Other gear: Aft mounted radar, chartplotter, gps, Autohelm, offshore liferaft, EPIRB, offshore dodger.
Structural or complex improvements Not yet.
The boat's best features Easy to sail, manuever, lots of room in this boat. RF main sure makes reefing and main sail handling easy, and makes sailing more enjoyable.Service group at Cruising specialists have been great. Finely tuned and equipment installed very well.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Concerned about the quality of the stainless arch metal - got some rust on welds. Had problems with the Autohelm computer, but that's what warranties are for.
Sailing characterisitcs Fast.Needs to be reefed in ~20kts (or earlier) wind to reduce weather helm and keep boat sailing flatter, but maintains very good speed and powers through chop and waves.
Motoring characterisitcs Two people can handle this boat. I'd hate to dock it alone.Reacts well under power. Backs in very nicely.3-blade fixed prop, 76hp turbo diesel. Cruising at 7.5kts with lots of RPMs to spare.
Liveability Bought it to live aboard but do not right now. This is a very comfortable boat and should be a great experience to live aboard.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Visited the factory - interesting, fun tour if you can find Alachua.Hunter customer service contacted me regarding a note I posted on this site regarding a problem I was having with the anchoring system - they read this board and called me before I ever needed or planned to call them.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Cruising Specialists has been very good. I am not experienced at the boat comissioning experience, but I think they did an excellent job preparing the boat for delivery - it was painless. They have been very good at handling the few things that I found out of place, or that have failed in the first few shake-down sailings.
