Review of the Hunter 45 by Michael Cohn

Year built 1987
Location of boat Southern California
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Multi-week coastal cruising
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1988
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? I would definitely buy the boat again, without hesitation.
Gear that's been added Many things. A power windlass, radar, autopilot, GPS, Satnav, new VHF, many batteries, to name a few major items.
Structural or complex improvements The backing plates for the backstay chainplates nearly pulled through the deck, necessitating reinforcement.
The boat's best features Fast, dry, fast, seaworthy, tracks absolutely straight, fast, comfortable.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Access to lines from the heads has been a bit of a problem. I have spent much time fairing the keel. The original roller furling basically sucks. The primary winches could be bigger, and I had to replace all of the sheet stoppers.
Sailing characterisitcs Upwind: very fast, points well when trimmed properly. Reaching: VERY fast, no nasty broahing tendencies. DDW: not wonderful; the main cannot be let out enough due to swept back spreaders.
Motoring characterisitcs I try NOT to motor. When I do, the boat motors comfortably at about 8.5 knots with no nasty motion. Backing is easy and straight.
Liveability Truly excellent.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Very positive for the most part, except getting through on the phone.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Eddie Arnold sailboats in Newport Beach, California. Eddie is no longer in business, probably because he is an honest man.
