Review of the Hunter 45 by Tim Brown

Year built
Location of boat Oceanside, CA
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1996
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? I would, without any question, purchase this boat again. The interior does not have a
Gear that's been added I have installed the following:2000 watt Heart inverter, Balmar 100amp alternator w/ smart charger, macerator, deck wash down, dodger, 12 volt exhaust fans for fresh air, GPS Chart Plotter, additional batteries, autopilot, dripless shaft packing, radar, new roller furling system. I would like to replace the manual windlass with a electric windlass and would like an electric winch to raise the main sail. If any one has information regarding my wants please contact me.
Structural or complex improvements I have not found it necessary to modify the structure.
The boat's best features The boat is fast! Well designed layout with very little teak above deck.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The factory installed referigation system draws the batterys down very quickly. I have found that the freezer and refrigator does not have adequate insulation.
Sailing characterisitcs The boat sails very well in light air. She will sail at 6 knots in 10 knots of wind pointed at 28 degrees off the wind. She also sail very fast in stronger winds.
Motoring characterisitcs I have a two blade Martec Folding propeller. I am not happy with the backing preformance of my boat which I am sure is due to the Martec Prop. I am considering changing the propeller to a three bladed fixed. Any suggestions? She currently motors at 7 knots at 2200rpm. The 55hp Yanmar Turbo diesel engine has been fantastic. I have not had any problems with the engine to date.
Liveability The boat is well layed out and very comfortable to live aboard if one desired.
