Review of the Hunter 42 by James M. Trammell

Year built 1995
Location of boat Harve De Grace, MD
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Multi-week coastal cruising
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1996
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? YES---a great sailer--very fast for what she is and then some--good room
Gear that's been added Autohelm 7000 autopilot, ST Radar 16 mile, wind machine-GPS---Bimini with aft and side sun shade --great storage boxes on lower part of the arch
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Handling--living room--hanging out space topsides---good value
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Main is very hard to raise and difficult to lower---windless is a very poor design and I haven't decided what to do about it (any suggestions ????)
Sailing characterisitcs so far sails very well --as with my H34 shorten sail (12-15k) early
Motoring characterisitcs good----- but I don't abuse the rpms....backs up ok---in my view needs more fuel filtration and I'll probably add more
Liveability very good--lots of room and storage --but not in the cockpit---can't figure out how to make the settee sleep 2--the holding tank is too small
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) limited but so far been very good---responsive
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Tidewater Marine at Harve De Grace ,Md---been a blast ---I am realistic enough to know that not everyone has a good relationship with their dealer---but mine has been very good--they did everything they said they would do and have done more--tried to be helpful and made my purchase as nice as it could be. A business relation that has become personal
