Review of the Hunter 42 by John

Year built 1993
Location of boat Westport MA
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Multi-week coastal cruising
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1993
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely. We are close to retirement(end 1998) and were looking for a boat to go south with. We essentially live on the boat all spring, summer
Gear that's been added All chain rode with Bruce anchor, Full Autohelm instruments including GPS
Structural or complex improvements Got rid of CNG system, done now but what a pig to do!Genoa 135% has supplied gives very very very poor visibility (Not good for a cruising sailor plus my wife was very nervous with it fully extended due to lack of visability)I added a staysail as noted above and made it self tending and modified the genoa to a yankee about 100%plus. This gives me a very flexable sail plan for our waters and plus to be honest when the winds get much over 18 knots I pull in the genoa and simply cruise along wit the self tending staysail. What a pleasure!!!!
The boat's best features Interior volume, the rear stateroom is perfect but does need a custom mattress if like me your over 250#The interior light makes liveable delightfull and the Galley(my home) is just about perfct now that we have propane.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Leaks from front
Sailing characterisitcs Needs 15 to really get in the groove, but then very stable with handlable helm 25 degees especially with my new sail plan (see above)! This is a cruise boat not a racer but that is what I knew when I purchased so no surprises
Motoring characterisitcs
Liveability
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Sailing Specialties (Jeff Marshal) in Noank CT was super he was more concerned about the usual startup problems tha I was. First class service from a first class dealer
