Review of the Hunter 40.5 by John Danenbarger

Year built 1994
Location of boat Salem, MA
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Multi-week coastal cruising
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1994
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, it has be perfect for what we wanted. The only reason we are trading in our boat is to get a blue-water version (i.e. 450). But we became very attached to it, especially after we took it to Bermuda and back.
Gear that's been added We added chocks on the bow and, of course, a dodger. Pads for the pulpit seats were given to us.
Structural or complex improvements Only the chocks and a storm sail track for our trip to Bermuda.
The boat's best features The interior!!!!!
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The roller furling was of low quality and we had new boat leaks that were hard to find.
Sailing characterisitcs We have tested this boat under about all extreme circumstances except a hurricane. It held up well.
Motoring characterisitcs I enjoyed the manuverability in tight quarters.
Liveability We enjoyed the interior as our cabin away from home and were so spoiled by it that, when we looked for a blue-water boat, we found none that we could
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Hunter went out it's way to help us with the leaks and the service people couldn't have been nicer. I gained a high level of confidence.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I made a mistake with the dealer I choose. I doubt that he is a dealer any more. The dealer for our 450 has been nothing but professional.
