Review of the Hunter 40.5 by Richard Owen

Year built 1994
Location of boat Vancouver, B.C., Canada
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Multi-week coastal cruising
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1997
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, Although it wouldn't be much of a turn back since I have only had it since last December. Our time has been spent
Gear that's been added Hot water heating system, Harken mainsail rollers, whisker pole, cockpit enclosure, navigation computer, larger alternator, maxprop, new batteries, minor electrical upgrades, new anchor and chain (45 lb. CQR with 200' 3/8
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Very comfortable boat - oustanding liveability below decks. So far, limited sailing experience although the boat seems to be seakindly. Sail handling appears well layed out for 2 to sail - doesn't look great for single handing.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. We had a problem with a sticky furler last time out (it is being checked out). The main is very difficult to raise (thus the Harken system - and maybe eventually an electric winch). The fact that the helmsman can't readily reach the main sheet isn't good but then there are few boats around in this class (recent cruisers) which have this feature. Access to the main sail headboard is difficult (need mast steps to reach it) which means a potential safety issue in rough weather. The solution is leave it alone until safe to do so.
Sailing characterisitcs Not enough experience yet to comment.
Motoring characterisitcs Seems OK - the stern buries at higher speeds. Handling under power is generally very good.
Liveability Excellent!!
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Good response from technical services in response to questions about the boat - quick and very helpful.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Specialty Yachts in Vancouver were very professional and did all they could to make it a worry-free experience.
