Review of the Hunter 40.5 by Michael Clark

Year built 1996
Location of boat miami, Fl
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1996
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Like the boat despite teething problems.
Gear that's been added Autohelm windindicator. 35lb. delta anchor, 50' chain and 250 nylon rhode. Planning to add autopilot and fixed gps. Heavy duty house battery.Bimini and full spray shield.
Structural or complex improvements Spray hood covering companionway hatch was reinforced with aluminium strip.
The boat's best features Sailing performance. Below deck layout.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Leak around mast. Spray hood hatch cover. Aft head sink seacock must be shut when sailing or seawater will back up and over flow into cabin. same problem as on passage 42.
Sailing characterisitcs Not sailed much so far due to poor dealer commisioning. Boat sails well and in calm waters will sail herself without auto pilot or having to tend the wheel fulltime.
Motoring characterisitcs Handles well under power. Dock boat in ntight space, turns well in fwd and reverse. Unable to tell cruising speed under power yet, need to calibrate knot meter.
Liveability So far great.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Hunter Marine has been helpfull to a point in presuring dealer make good on commisioning problems. However they claim that they do not have too much control over dealer ! Mixed feelings.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Purchased boat from Florida Yacht Charters and sales in Dec. 1996. Boat was "new" and used by them for boat show
