Owner bought the boat in 1993
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, I think the H 40.5 was a great buy when I purchased when I purchased her. Prices have riseconsiderably since its first introductionbut its still a good buy.
Gear that's been added I replaced the stock headsail with a Hild 10/40. I found the stock headsail did not reef well. I also added an autohelm st600autopilot since I usually sail with justmy wife a good autopilot is a must.I have a st 50 windmachine, rayton radar, loran,3 blade max prop relly helps in reverseand the reduction in drag adds about 3/4of a knot under sail.
Structural or complex improvements none
The boat's best features I like its sailing performance, not the best boat to windward but on most other points of sail there are few cruising boats that can stay with it. Last season sailing to block island I had a sabre 42 and an erickson 38 about 4 miles ahead of me. I was able to overtake both of them in a few hours.I also think the intirior design is superb. People cant belive that this is a 40 ft boat.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I have expirienced leaks throug the mast electrical wire entrance(seems to be a common problem). Also leaks in the aft cabin. Had some rudder water damage that had to be repaired. Otherwise all has been well. I tend to push the boat hard.
Sailing characterisitcs Fast on all points of sail except hard on the wind she likes to foot off. Not the best tracking boat. The price you pay for all that beam aft.
Motoring characterisitcs I installed a 3 blade max prop the boat motors great. Great boat in reverse people are amazed at how well she handles in reverse. Must be that big rudder.
Liveability Exellent livability have spend up to two on her I could hve spend 2 months. Confortable aft cabin good systems.Upgrading battery capacity a must.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) There pretty good have not had any major dealings with them.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought the boat from Sailing Specialties in Noank CT
