Review of the Hunter 40.5 by John Baker

Year built 1997
Location of boat Harbor Island, San Diego, CA
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes definetly. We love it especially in the light air of San Diego. No real problems to date.
Gear that's been added No, we are pretty well equiped as we purchased it with GPS plotter, radar, auto pilot, etc.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Light air sailing, interior layout and comforts (important because we spend long weekends and longer on it). Easy to handle except for main sail dousing
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Difficulty with lowering and covering main sail.
Sailing characterisitcs As mentioned, good performance in light air. Cruising speeds are excellent under motor or sail if enough wind. We steadily do 7 knots on lenghy trips (50 NM)
Motoring characterisitcs See above
Liveability Excellent for one, good for two couples. Forward berth a little too cramped but not bad. Would have been better to redistribute space in main cabin and head for more forward space.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Very responsive and helpful.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any No
