Review of the Hunter 380 by Eric Gruff

Year built 1999
Location of boat San Diego, CA
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1999
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, definitely.
Gear that's been added B
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Below deck layout, appearance, upwind performance
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Leak at back of aft cabin (still not fixed)Several doors don't close due to swellingDodger not installed correctly (blocked winch handles), then fixed incorrectly
Sailing characterisitcs Boat performs very well upwind. Easily stays with boats in the 35 to 40 foot range.Downwind is frustrating. The tripod rig is awkward at best with the sails
Motoring characterisitcs We took the boat to Ensenada and back under motor. The Yanmar performed flawlessly and the 38 hp it produces is definitely enough for the boat. It's actually rather quiet with all the insulation that Hunter provided.
Liveability Nice and spacious (we graduated up from a 25', so that may have something to do with it). My wife, son and I have plenty of room to hang out without bumping into each other and the boat. The interior is nicely laid out.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Haven't dealt with them.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any H
