Review of the Hunter 380 by Bob Knott

Year built 1999
Location of boat Wychmere Harbor, Harwichport, MA
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1999
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, The 380 was a great step up from our 280. The extra 10 feet gives three times the space, but 3 times the cost too! My wife and 2 kids especially love the additional room. Great down below layout, nice sailing boat. Sails all day at 6.5 to 7 knots in a track.
Gear that's been added Electric windlass, power winch, custom mattress in aft berth, custom dodger, TV/VCR on custom teak shelf. St50 wind. Autohelm 6000 autopilot, Raytheon RL72RC radar.Chartplotter/GPS at helm, PSS dripless stuffing box, bird wires on spreaders, spinnaker halyard.
Structural or complex improvements No other than having a craftsman make a custom teak shelf for the 9
The boat's best features ease of sailing, and room for the family to enjoy the sailing experience.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Always have minor warranty issues, Hunter is great about fixing them up.
Sailing characterisitcs My 280 didn't really get in a groove and track well, this boat does. Once you get it setup, and if the winds consistent you can sail hands off. Nicely balanced boat.
Motoring characterisitcs Motors ok, 6knots at 2800rpm. My 280 did that though so I expected more. Might have 1 size too small a motor for this size boat, but hey I bought it to sail not motor. Yanmar is a thing of beautie... better than a timex it just keeps on ticking!
Liveability This is it's best feature! We lived on a mooring in Nantucket last summer for a week and with 2 adults and a 10
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) EXCELLENTI've written volumes on this site about how great Hunter's customer service is. Eddie Breedan is a man with equal in this industry. Everytime I've had an issue it's been resolved to my satisfaction, and more!
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Cape Yacht Sales on Cape Cod is great. I've now purchased 5 boats from them... enough said!Their warranty repairs are not the best, but mostly that's because the economy is so good right now they are selling boats faster than they can commission them, so the after service suffers. I've been assured they'll correct that this winter, but hey I know they have to sell boats to survive so I guess I'm just gonna be patient and hope all things get settled in time.
