Review of the Hunter 37-cutter by Blaise Pierson

Year built 1979
Location of boat Bradenton, FL
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Racing
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 6
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1979
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. I love this boat.
Gear that's been added Electric head, Air conditioning, generator, two GPS's, 5kw generator, refreigeration, radar, weather fax, full instruments, propane stove, chart plotter.
Structural or complex improvements We reinforced the bow with 2" by 2" vertical ribs every six inches from the bulkhead forward to the stem, after we noticed oil canning during our first Atlantic crossing. That fixed the problem. We took the babystay, staysailboom and staysail off and threw them away. The boat is very fast as a sloop. We changed the 1/4" uppers with 5/16" rod and added a set of intermediates from the spreaders to where the runners attached. This eliminated mast fall off that we had beam reaching with a chute in heavy weather.
The boat's best features I have the deep draft version of this boat and it has no bad habits. It is fast, stable, and safe. Layout is traditional. We took out the dining table.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Plastic ports don't work offshore. I replaced all the hatches and ports with new Lewmar units. The hull to deck joint leaked like Niagra Falls since the boat was new. I finally had both toerails removed re-caulked, and replaced. Replaced the cabin sole after 16 years.
Sailing characterisitcs In the 18 years I have owned the boat I have seen everything. The boat never scares you even when the weather does. The boat fares fine in seventy knots of wind and twenty foot seas even though the crew doesn't.
Motoring characterisitcs We are on the secong engine. The boat came with a Yanmar 2QM20. Great engine, great feul economy, terrible vibration. It was replaced after 4700 hours with a Yanmar 3GM30F. This engine is one third the size, half the noise, none of the vibration, just as fast, and drinks four times the fuel of the old engine. No complaints from either one.
Liveability I lived aboard for two years and loved it. The seperate shower makes it a good live aboard boat.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought the boat, had it commissioned, them sailed out of the country. In that limited experiance, I had no problems.
