Review of the Hunter 376 by Manny Jimenez

Year built 1996
Location of boat Charleston SC
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1996
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Maybe- I've had several problems with my 376. This is my fourth Hunter and I am not satisfied with what's happened thus far. To date, the prop was not true, causing severe vibrations and eventually the shaft uncoupled and damaged the right rear engine mount
Gear that's been added 4.5 kw genset, Autohelm 7000, Autohelm wind indicator, GPS, in-mast furling system.
Structural or complex improvements no-I would like the basic elements to work first.
The boat's best features I really do like the design and handling of my 376. It's roomy and I've had her in 30 knot winds and she has handled well. She points extremely well and handles down wind.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The in-mast main furling system is being rigged improperly from the factory causing excessive wear on the main halyard. My halyard exactually ripped. The rear exhaust port on the engine was turned such that it vibrates on the rear engine panel. My forward cabin door will not close. The boom vang has broke 2 times---e-mail me for more
Sailing characterisitcs Charleston harbor and coast tend to be gusty and winds normally reach 20 knots on a daily basis. When working right the 376 is quite the boat. Although, I have missed several good weeks of fantastic wheather I'm looking forward to the weeks ahead---even if we are approaching huricane season!
Motoring characterisitcs The prop caused severe vibration which inturn caused the bolts holding the shaft to the coupler to vibrate off. This caused the shaft to bend and disconnect from the engine. The shaft put so much torque on the engine that the right rear engine mount snapped. This caused damage to the transmission and wood work around the engine cowling. It should also be noted that the transmission cable was not long enough causing the transmission to shift very hard.
Liveability Since I couldn't take her out we spent many weekends on her. She is an extremely comfortable boat.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) It's been good up until now?
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any We have a great dealer!!! They are just as frustrated as I am.
