Review of the Hunter 376 by Ian Davis

Year built 1997
Location of boat Havre de Grace, Maryland
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1997
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, this has been a fun boat for the first year, however I am planning on making some minor changes to make life a little easier and safer.
Gear that's been added refrigeration, inverter, second house battery, windlass, dogeriminiridge, 100 amp alternator, gpsmap 210, fans.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features liveabilitycomfort, sailing on a reach
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. As most have pointed out raising the main can be a pain. The reefing lines create a lot of friction. We leave ours pulled out through the boom. I will also be adding batt cars to the mainsail to ease the raising and lowering of the sail.
Sailing characterisitcs We have been in 40 knot winds on the bay without any concerns. Typical sailing is done in 10 to 15 knots. The 376 sails well on all points. We have even had it up to 7.4 knots under a reef sailing close hauled in 20 knots.
Motoring characterisitcs The 376 will reach 5.5 to 5.7 knots when motoring at 2500 rpm. I will look into replacing the prop with a three blade autoprop this year.
Liveability Extremely comfortable. The 376 has the living area of a 40 footer and all the comforts. Head room is great - except for the aft berth. The shower is a wonderfull pleasure when crusing for a week or more.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Hunter has always treated us fairly, even when we were out of warranty with our 29.5. Tidewater Marina in particular has always done a great job at preparing and reparing our boats when needed.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any We purchased or second Hunter from Tidewater Marina and will continue to do so. They are always very helpful and accomodating.
