Owner bought the boat in 1990
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, I most definitely would. It was a great starter boat to learn the joys and skills of sailing, while giving us the sense of security in a sound boat. As a young family it has plenty of room and storage capacity for all of our needs. It also has lots of room for improvement gear wise to convert to a racing boat.
Gear that's been added VHF, depth guage, knot meter, am/fm sterio, adjustable backstay, spinnaker rigging, pole, mainsheet traveler, cunningham, two speed primary winches, tiller tamer.
Structural or complex improvements 1) welded chanels on rudder housing as it cracked during extreme healing.2) lowered and moved rudder forward to reduce weather helm.3) cut holes and put deck plates over adjustment screws at top of keel, (which are at the base of table). The bolts prevent the keel form flopping back and forth while beating and working the keel plates loose. This also improves beating and weather helm. We tapped a two inch sq. stainless plate and glassed it to the recieving cavity of the keel, then adjusted the screws to just touch the sides of the keel a few inches from the top.
The boat's best features Very roomy below and in the cockpit.Easy hoisting and rigging to make sailing her fun for the less experienced guests aboard.Swing keel makes for a day at a beach or cove very easily accesable.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Sever weather helm with no correcting moment from the rudder.Leakes at fixed portal windows. No really good area for a bildge pump. When staying the night we have to move the head out of the v-berth.
Sailing characterisitcs Good solid boat in all conditions but if just barely over canvased above say 12 knots the weather helm is a heavy load. While racing we are competitive in winds less than 10 knots with a 255 PHRF. Above that, we seem to be in the middle of the pack because of the windward legs.VC 17 and some performance sails have made acceleration a night and day difference.
Motoring characterisitcs We installed an evenrude 4.0 to be able to easly remove it while racing and get about 4-5 knots without current. The motor and tiller together make turning in tight places very easy.
Liveability Great for four adults for a weekend.Great for mom's, dad's and a couple of kids for a holiday weekend.
