Review of the Hunter 22 by Norm Bush

Year built 1982
Location of boat Frankfort/Elberta
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1995
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? yes,it was a big step having never sailed anything larger than a 12'snark, but it has been a great learning experience. I don't think I would have done so well on a less forgiving boat.
Gear that's been added vhf radio, depth finder
Structural or complex improvements no
The boat's best features lots of storage space for a 22'and the built in fold down table at the transom it's a great spot for barbques and an evening beer or game of cards etc.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. it seems that it doesn't take much wind to make this boat heel over, and I have noticed that it seems to rock a lot more than the other boats at the marina. I believe that is just a trait for a non weighted centerboard. It does leak a little around the centerboard trunk but this happens mainly in waves larger than 5'
Sailing characterisitcs she does tend to have a slight weather helm but with the swing keel you can adjust to conditions
Motoring characterisitcs with an 8hp mariner we can motor along at approx. 6 knots and it is a plus to be able to use the tiller and the outboard pivot when faced with tight manuvering room
Liveability two of us have spent up to 9 days without a problem there is more than enough space for us and our SCUBA equipment, two adults and up to three kids have spent up to three days but tempers do begin to get short. I would call this an excellent weekend type of boat for the small family.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I called the home office in Florida because I needed an owners manual and even though my boat is 15 yrs. old they still had a copy and sent one to me in 5 days. I'm pleased so far.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any We bought through a broker in travere city and he offered to come out and personaly step the mast and set up everything for the first few times if we felt we needed his help.
