Review of the Hunter 22 by Chris Edmonson

If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, definitely. The second my spouse stepped in the cabin she was sold... thespace comapred to the Catalina 22's wehad been looking at until then was sucha contrast. The PHRF rating was lower by12 seconds and the little things addedup to a great package. (ie: anchor well,built-in stove, aluminum toe rail, nearbullet proof traveler, etc.) Sailing the boat gave the same impression right away.We were pleased with the choice and havecontinued to be so.  
Gear that's been added Very little to add... we upgraded thecompass, put in a new knotmeter, usea different propane stove than the stockversion, lamp  
Structural or complex improvements Let's talk about the centerboard and theleak problem. From the get-go there wasa persistent leak at the centerboard trunk. With several tries at remedy we finally came up with a cure by glassingin the receiving end of the hull platethat holds the board in place... com-plete with grounding bolt in stainlesssteel and three part harmony. Thatworked out although we are still not drysince there is still a problem with theseal around the knotmeter. More work will undoubtedly follow.  
The boat's best features Space - unexpected space. Again, our basis for comparison was the C22 so thathit us right off. The anchor locker was big plus and the built-in cooler/lockerwith a table in the cockpit were veryusefull. The layout and spacing of the lockers in the cabin was very friendly  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Hatch locks are broken, they will forceus to replace the hatch... but that willbe awhile.  
Sailing characterisitcs Tender to a fault. We are very aware ofsail reductions when the wind comes upor is gusty. The boat will head up ata sneeze if overcanvassed by any amount.The weather helm is a real distractionin a race with lively conditions.Even with the great array of tweekers,boom traveler, reefing points, etc.there are times when you would just like a better handling boat. Other-wise the boat is very friendly and in"correct" conditions handles wonderfully.  
Motoring characterisitcs This is an Outboard powered boat and notdesigned for the amount of fuel I havehad or needed to have on board sometimesI've found no problems with motoringwith a 6 hp long shaft Johnson (it's a9.9hp that was derated!) in normal waterbut in a confused sea the stern mounted motor was dunked a few times to its operational detriment. Backing or tight quarters I find the dual control of rudder  
Liveability Okay, this IS a small boat. BUT I have lived on board for a week or two withoutstunting my growth and with a good anchorage at propitious moments find theaccommodations acceptable. With twopeople aboard I can survive 3 or 4 daysand more than that it becomes a realchallenge to last more than two days.For all that, everything in its placeand everybody knowing where to find andreturn things -- fairly agree-able considering the siminutive nature. As long as everyone spends an appropriateamount of time on deck!!  
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Daunting. Puzzling. This is on one very short phone conversation when wewere triying to come up with a solu-tion to the leak.  
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any The broker worked very hard to help usunderstand the transaction and make itas smooth as posible.
