Review of the Hunter 35.5 by steve young

Year built 1991
Location of boat Lake Ontario
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1991
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Probably. It was a good choice overall, given my level of knowledge at the time.
Gear that's been added autohelm, dodger-bimini
Structural or complex improvements we sail it stock
The boat's best features Sails very well. We've been in a few storms and blows and felt safe. Lots of room below and very comfortable on a rainy day. I love the "back porch" on my boat. A really great platform for boarding, swimming, barbecuing, and for fending off the motor boat dock on the night the anchor dragged. My wife and I have no trouble handling this boat together.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. fuel fill leak caused engine problems early on, leak at base of mast, roller furling can be hard to work at times.Wish the holding tank was larger. We like to keep a dry bilge, so a shower that drains into it discourages below decks showering.Servicing the batteries in their location underneath the cockpit proved to be next to impossible, so I cut a hole in the bulkhead in the owner's stateroom and this has worked very well.cng is safe but inconvenient to obtain
Sailing characterisitcs Likes to be reefed down in heavy air but sails well in a variety of conditions.
Motoring characterisitcs Motors ok, but had to install a clam shell strainer on the intake to prevent clogging of lines in weedy water at docks.
Liveability My wife and I often spend several weeks aboard in the summer and usually take a long trip during that time. Very livable. We could stay aboard indefinitely as a twosome. If the weather gets hot, the owner stateroom will need a fan.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Negative. Try to get a human voice to answer. Did you call the dealer, Steve?
