Review of the Hunter 35.5 by Craig

Year built 1988
Location of boat San Diego, CA
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Nope, I would rather have a late 80's 34. The layout is much more condusive to sailing with 2-4 persons. Also, the balance of the boat seems to be less affected by the location of the fresh water tank.
Gear that's been added Yes, We've installed a new (larger) water pump, a new head, an inverter, an externally regulated alternator, ABYC approved (separate) AC
Structural or complex improvements Not yet!
The boat's best features Goes fast when ballanced correctly. Roomy accommodations for a weekend.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The fresh water tank is located too far forward and causes excessive weatherhelm when full. Fiberglass headliner makes running wiring a real headache, ditto for tracing a leak. The Toe rail was fastened using stainless carriage bolts. The problem with this technique is that using carriage bolts requires intimate contact between the aluminum rail and the stainless fasteners. A better technique would be to either use aluminum fasteners, or slotted pan-head stainless fasteners through round holes (originally the holes were square in order to accept the carriage bolts).
Sailing characterisitcs Water tank problems aside, she is fast responsive, and exciting in flat seas.
Motoring characterisitcs We're talking about SAIL boats here, right?
Liveability She is incredibly roomy for 35.5 feet, but is needlessly wasteful of stowage space.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
