Review of the Hunter 170 by Patrick Barton

If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? yes  
Gear that's been added windex, tiller tamer, 2.5 hp outboard, full cover  
Structural or complex improvements no, but i want to put a reef in the main, have discussed with hunter, they recommend a 20%.  
The boat's best features in order of importance:roomy cockpitsimple to rig (i often do it alone)easy to sail  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. well, there was the problem with the rudder/tiller assembly that came with the original 170's. it was a wacky piece of work. happily, hunter has replaced it with good strong rudder and tiller with hiking stick.it also seems to take a lot of the lake home with it, takes a while to drain.  
Sailing characterisitcs pretty stable all the way through about 15mph, although you've got a noticeable weatherhelm by then. beyond that (small whitecap) it turns to weather of its' own accord. doesn't really heel excessively, if you don't mind water near the leeward rail, but is really difficult to manage. i think it needs to have reefing points in the main.  
Motoring characterisitcs pretty much goes where i point it. haven't had a need to go in reverse, so can't comment on that  
Liveability it's a great daysailer, the best i've ever owned.  
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) real friendly, real knowledgeable, very willing to assist. but, then, they seem to have a problem with implementation. its liking talking to a wise and friendly chief who's only nominally in charge of a bunch of unruly indians. can be frustrating.  
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any bought from weathermark in buford, ga.they've been great, put up with all my whining, and their service has been evenly excellent.
